ChromeBeat Privacy Policy

Introduction

ChromeBeat records how long people spend on specific, organization-approved web applications, so their employer can make informed decisions about software licenses. It records nothing on any other website.

ChromeBeat is a browser extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, published by Bimbeats Pty Ltd ("Bimbeats", "we", "us"). It is part of the Bimbeats analytics suite for architecture, engineering, and construction firms.

ChromeBeat is not intended for personal use. It is installed by an organization's IT department on company-managed computers, together with the Bimbeats desktop application. In this policy, "your organization" means the employer or company that deployed it.

This policy covers the ChromeBeat extension only. Your organization's own policies govern how it uses the data it receives.

Information ChromeBeat collects

ChromeBeat only records visits to websites on an allowlist that your organization chooses, such as its licensed design or collaboration tools. Visits to any other site are not recorded.

For each visit to an allowlisted site:

Support and compatibility

The time is only counted while you are actively using the browser. When the computer is idle for 5 minutes, the screen is locked, or the browser is not in focus, the timer pauses. ChromeBeat uses only the browser's idle, active or locked state for this; it does not record keystrokes or mouse movement.

What ChromeBeat does not collect

ChromeBeat does not read or record:

  • Browsing on any website that is not on your organization's allowlist

  • The content of web pages, including text, images, form entries and files

  • Passwords, cookies, or any login or payment details

  • Keystrokes, clicks, mouse movement or scrolling

  • Emails, chat messages or other communications

  • Your name, email address or Google account

  • Your precise location or IP address

ChromeBeat does not load or run any code from the internet. All of its code is included in the extension package.

How the data is handled

ChromeBeat itself never sends data over the internet. It hands it to the Bimbeats desktop application on the same computer, which delivers it to your organization's Bimbeats environment.

  1. In the browser. ChromeBeat keeps the visit in progress, and finished visits not yet saved, in the browser's local extension storage. They are removed once saved to a file.

  2. On the computer. About once a minute, ChromeBeat saves finished visits as a small file in Downloads\chromebeat\logs.

  3. Bimbeats desktop app. The Bimbeats app on the same computer reads each file, adds the Windows user name and computer name so usage can be attributed, and deletes the file.

  4. Your organization's Bimbeats environment. The Bimbeats app uploads the data over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) to the Bimbeats environment your organization uses. Depending on your organization's setup, this is hosted by your organization or by Bimbeats on its behalf.

Your organization's administrators can then view reports, for example how many hours per month each licensed application is used.

How the data is used

The data is used only to show your organization how its licensed web applications are used, so it can plan license purchases and renewals. The technical snapshot is used only for support and compatibility.

The data is not used for advertising, is not sold, and is not used to assess creditworthiness or for lending.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use. The use of information received from ChromeBeat adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide ChromeBeat's single purpose and is never transferred for any other purpose.

Who can see the data

The data belongs to your organization. Your organization decides which sites are tracked, who can see the reports and how long data is kept. Bimbeats processes the data on your organization's behalf.

  • Your organization's administrators can see the data through Bimbeats reports and dashboards.

  • Bimbeats staff may access it only when needed to operate a Bimbeats-hosted environment or to provide support your organization has asked for. Explicit permissing would need to be issued.

  • Service providers that host Bimbeats environments process data only on our instructions. Elastic Cloud.

We do not sell, rent or share the data with anyone else, except where required by law.

Retention

On your computer, ChromeBeat's files exist only until the Bimbeats app picks them up, normally within a few minutes. In your organization's Bimbeats environment, data is kept for the period your organization configures.

Security

Data is uploaded over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Access to Bimbeats environments is limited to authorized accounts.

Your choices and rights

Because ChromeBeat is deployed and configured by your organization, questions about the data, requests to see or delete it, and requests to change what is tracked should go to your organization's IT department or administrator first. Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights to access, correct or delete personal data; your organization handles those requests, and we help it do so.

ChromeBeat is installed by your organization's IT policy, so it cannot be removed from the browser by the user. Uninstalling Bimbeats from the computer removes ChromeBeat as well.

Children

ChromeBeat is a workplace tool and is not directed at children under 16.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when ChromeBeat's data practices change and revise the date at the top.
